Abstract:

Against the backdrop of intensifying global climate change, elucidating the spatiotemporal differentiation characteristics of vegetation photosynthetic physiological signals and gross primary productivity, along with their hydrothermal driving mechanisms, is crucial for accurately assessing the global carbon sink potential. Based on global LHSIF and TRAX GPP data spanning from 2002 to 2024, this study analyzed the spatiotemporal variations in solar-induced chlorophyll fluorescence (SIF) and gross primary productivity (GPP), and identified their key hydrothermal drivers. The results show that the interannual variation rates of global SIF and GPP are 5.48×10-4 mW·m-2·sr-1·nm-1·a-1 and 7.5×10-3 g·m-2·d-1·a-1, respectively. The overall variation trends are predominantly stable and increasing, with areas showing significant increases and decreases in SIF accounting for 29.88% and 8.64%, respectively, and those for GPP accounting for 31.07% and 21.56%, respectively. In some regions, photosynthetic physiological signals fail to synchronously translate into ecosystem carbon sequestration capacity. Furthermore, SIF is primarily driven by thermal or radiation factors (with a relative contribution of 57.87%), whereas GPP is more strongly driven by moisture factors (with a relative contribution of 55.95%). The dominant driving factors of SIF and GPP undergo systematic shifts across different vegetation types and climate zones, and the translation of photosynthetic physiological signals into carbon sequestration outcomes is jointly controlled by regional hydrothermal conditions, climatic backgrounds, and vegetation functional attributes. Further analysis indicates that the driving effects of key hydrothermal factors, including total evapotranspiration, total precipitation, and surface thermal radiation downwards, on vegetation photosynthesis and productivity exhibit pronounced non-linear characteristics and threshold effects. Additionally, these driving mechanisms demonstrate asymmetry under different long-term variation trends.
